Total eyes new wells as Elgin restarts

Total is to drill a number of infill wells at the leak-hit Elgin-Franklin field as production resumed almost a year after being shut in.

The French supermajor is also to permanently abandon other wells at the UK North Sea play after a review of operations following the March 2012 blowout and subsequently lengthy gas leak.

Total restarted production at the field on Saturday, just days after being given the green light by UK authorities to do so.

The operator said production should "soon" hit close to 70,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, which represents 50% of production potential.
