Statoil gets going on Lupin

Statoil has finally kicked off drilling of a stalled high-risk and high-reward well at its Lupin prospect in the Utsira High area off Norway, according to licence partner Noreco.

Spudding of the 16/8-3S wildcat in production licence 360 had been delayed from November as recent upgrade work on the 1976-built semi-submersible Songa Trym, which is drilling the well, took longer than expected for rig contractor Songa Offshore.

The probe could potentially open a new sub-salt play in the mature North Sea with Statoil hoping to tap more of the hidden hydrocarbon secrets of the prospective Utsira High, which also hosts the giant Johan Sverdrup discovery.

Noreco has estimated the prospect could hold proven and probable resources of between 102 and 760 million…
