Chavez now unlikely to be embalmed

Heightened tensions: Nicolas Maduro has no shortage of unsubstantiated plot allegations

Hugo Chavez’s body is now highly unlikely to be embalmed and put on permanent display despite a vow from the Venezuelan ex-president’s followers to do so.

Acting leader Nicolas Maduro also ratcheted up tensions with the US even further by claiming to have uncovered an assassination plot against his rival candidate for presidency, Henrique Capriles.

Maduro had promised immediately after Chavez’s death on 5 March that the iconic leader of the oil-rich nation would be embalmed and put on permanent display at a yet-to-be-built museum to be called the Museum of the Revolution.

Such a move would, however, appear to have been against Chavez’s own wishes: reports indicate he expressly ordered to be buried on the plains in his home state of Barinas.
