CSS project: John Hayes-led agency narrows CCS field to two

The UK said Wednesday that proposals from Shell and Alstom have advanced to the next round of a contest for a £1 billion ($1.51 billion) carbon capture and storage project (CCS).

The Shell and SSE-led Peterhead Project in Aberdeenshire, Scotland would capture 90% of carbon dioxide from a power station for storage in the depleted Goldeneye gas field in the North Sea.

The White Rose Project, which would be in Yorkshire, England, would trap 90% of CO2 from a coal power plant for storage in a North Sea saline aquifer. That proposal is put forth by French power company Alstom, as well as Drax Power, BOC and National Grid.
