Statoil in US Gulf lease haul

Statoil bagged 15 new leases after submitting high bids in the latest Gulf of Mexico lease sale, taking its total tally to 340 permits as it bolsters its acreage position in the region.

"This addition of leases allows us to further build upon our broad-based strategy for exploration in the Gulf of Mexico and further upgrades our core position in this prolific and proven basin,” said the company’s head of US Gulf exploration, Erik Finnstrom.

The big catch for Statoil was Walker Ridge Block 271, on which it submitted the highest bid of $81.7 million together with partner Samson Offshore, and it is now targeting the Monument high-impact prospect on the block with possible resources of 250 million barrels of oil equivalent or more.
