Spill costs: may exceed insurance coverage

Pipeline operator Enbridge Energy Partners said the additional costs of clean-up from the massive 2010 oil spill in Michigan will exceed the limits of the company's insurance and will likely affect its financial results.

The US arm of the Canadian pipeline giant said in a securities filing that it had received a final order from the US Environmental Protection Agency earlier this month "requiring additional containment and active recovery of submerged oil" relating to the ruptured Line 6B crude that spewed oil into the Kalamazoo River in July 2010.

The incident in south-central Michigan saw more than 20,000 barrels of heavy crude spilt into the river, marking the largest onshore oil spill in US history.
