Woman shot dead in Tanzania gas protest

A pregnant woman was shot dead in Tanzania last week after security forces cracked down on a protest of the building of a pipeline in the gas-rich East African country, a report has claimed.

The woman, who was said to be seven months pregnant, was shot in her home in Mtwara on Thursday, the BBC reported on its website.

Local security forces were reacting to a protest from some residents against the planned construction of a gas pipeline from Mtwara to the commercial capital of Dar es Salaam.

The protesters want a gas processing plant to be built in Mtwara instead of the pipeline which will not create as many long-term jobs.

Oil companies have recently unearthed large gas deposits off Tanzania with more discoveries hoped for. They will require the building of much gas infrastructure onshore.
