Washington snags Fort Hills design work

By Upstream staff

Idaho-based engineering giant Washington Group said it had won a contract to provide front-end engineering and design work for Fort Hills' oil sands upgrader near Edmonton, Alberta.

Washington said it would carry out site preparation work ahead of construction of the facility in Sturgeon County. It will also be involved in utilities and offsite support systems including heating, cooling and piping systems and the construction of an electical substation.

The company said it would also be involved in the integration of systems for the entire project.

The facility will convert bitumen from Fort Hills' oil sands mine in northern Alberta into synthetic crude.

Fort Hills is a joint venture led by Petro-Canada (55%), along with UTS Energy Corporation (30%) and Teck Cominco (15%).

Washington said it would carry out the work from its Denver, Colorado, offices.
