France's Total has begun drilling the Garantiana 2 appraisal well in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea.
The Paris-headquartered major is drilling the 34/6-3S probe, dubbed Garantiana 2, with the semi-submersible Leiv Eiriksson.
The northern North Sea well will be drilled in a water depth of 393 metres in production licence 554, where a subsequent sidetrack, 34/6-3A, is also planned.
The well’s main purpose is to evaluate the oil discovery in the Lower Jurassic Cook formation that was made in 2012 and has a current recoverable resource estimate of between 25 million and 75 million barrels of oil.
Total holds a 40% operating stake in PL554 with partners Det Norske Oljeselskap, Spike Exploration and Svenska Petroleum each on 20%.
