Shah Deniz gas flows reach Turkey

By Upstream staff

Turkey took delivery of its Azeri natural gas via the $4 billion Shah Deniz pipeline, an official at state-run pipeline group Botas said.

Plans to pump Azeri gas through the pipeline, operated jointly by BP and Statoil , have been delayed several times by technical issues.

The project is seen as a major source of gas diversification for the EU and Turkey, both heavily reliant on Russian energy, Reuters reported.

Deliveries will be extended to Greece and Italy first, with Greece receiving its first supplies on 10 August. The pipeline aims to link up to the EU-backed Nabucco pipeline project, which is still in the development stage.
