The number exploring for oil increased by 13 to 1558, or up 168 units from a year ago.
The count searching for gas grew by three to 314, off by 39 from a year ago.
The Gulf of Mexico offshore shed three rigs to 54, a count flat from a year ago.
By state, Oklahoma saw the largest change in its count, adding eight units for a total of 208.
Pennsylvania also added two rigs for a count of 59, while counts in Kansas and Louisiana fell by three and two to 30 and 107 respectively.
By play, Texas' Granite Wash formation added two rigs for a total of 72, while North Dakota's Williston basin added three for 178.
Louisiana's Haynesville play shed three rigs for a count of 41, with the Mississippian also dropping by two for a count of 77.
