Scorpion lines up Brazil sting

By Upstream staff

Bermuda-based drilling contractor Scorpion Offshore looks set to move its new-build jack-up rig Offshore Resolute to Brazil after submitting the lowest bid for a contract with state-owned giant Petrobras.

Scorpion said the contract award was still subject to final board approval by Petrobras.

Petrobras was seeking a high-specification jack-up for at least two years' work off the country, with the contract expected to start in the second quarter of 2008, it said.

The value of the contract was estimated at about $144 million, including $9 million in mobilisation and demobilisation fees.

Scorpio said it expected to sign a deal withing 45 days if Petrobras approves the contract.

The Offshore Resolute is the third of five LeTourneau Super 116 jack-ups being built at Keppel Amfels yard in Brownsville, Texas. A sixth rig, a LeTourneau Super 116E, is being built by Lamprell in Dubai.

Meanwhile, confirming it had signed a contract with Scorpion, United Arab Emirates-based Lamprell said the jack-up it is building comes with a $168 million price tag.

Work is starting immediately, with the unit due for delivery in early 2009.
