Union weighs up Harcourt retreat

By Upstream staff

Nigerian white collar oil union Pengassan may withdraw its office-based members from Port Harcourt as running battles between the armed forces and gangsters in the city's streets intensify, general secretary Bayo Olowoshile said today.

But the union, which is due to hold a meeting in Lagos later today, is not considering pulling workers from oilfields or shipping terminals, he told Reuters.

Local media reported that up to 40 people were killed in gun battles between troops and gangs in Port Harcourt yesterday.

"If the situation in Port Harcourt becomes unbearable, we will insist that companies make arrangements to evacuate workers pending security measures," Olowoshile said.

Asked whether the union was considering withdrawal from oilfields or export terminals, he said: "We do not envisage that for now. What is happening now is in Port Harcourt."
