Petrobras waits on Tupi South tests

By Gareth Chetwynd

Petrobras expects to conclude a well test on the Tupi South prospect by the end of this week after which the company should be closer to evaluating the true potential of a discovery billed as a potential giant, according to the company’s exploration and production director Guilherme Estrella.

The Tupi discovery is located on Block BM-S-11 and is part of an emerging sub-salt play in the Santos basin.

The first wildcat on the block concluded resulted in a flow of 30 degree (API) light oil at a rate of 4900 barrels of light oil per day, with 150,000 cubic metres per day of natural gas, drawing through a vertical shaft only.

Data from the discovery well prompted block partner BG to tell analysts that hydrocarbons in place could be as high as 10 billion barrels of oil equivalent.

Estrella stressed that Petrobas would carry out lengthy evaluation of the well data before moving closer to making its own estimates.

"Anything that is said about Tupi now is still in the realm of mere expectations," Estrella said.

Petrobras is currently drilling another prospect called Carioca on Block BM-S-9, in the same region of the Campos basin.
