IPI pipeline talks press ahead

By Upstream staff

Experts from Iran and Pakistan have started talks in Tehran on the $ 7.4 billion Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) pipeline without the participation of India, who says it will not attend the tri-nation meetings unless a transit fee issue is resolved with Pakistan

Iran had called a meeting of technical experts and lawyers from the three nations to exchange views on the gas-supply contract that India and Pakistan would have to sign with fuel supplier Iran.

Officials of the three countries are expected to discuss the issue tomorrow.

India and Pakistan have reached a broad understanding on the transportation tariff payable to Pakistan for transporting natural gas through the its 1035-kilometre segment of the pipeline.

The new round of talks aims to finalise the text of contract on the pipeline, the Economic Times newspaper reported.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said the IPI project was at an advanced stage of negotiations.

Iran plans to export 30 million cubic metres of gas per day to Pakistan once the two sides reach an agreement.

The proposed 2600 kilometre long pipeline project is being built to deliver natural gas from Iran to Pakistan and India.
