MMS lines up deep-water Gulf bids

By Upstream staff

The Interior Department’s Minerals Management Services (MMS) has received 1428 bids from 73 companies for 723 tracts on offer in tomorrow’s central Gulf of Mexico lease sale, the MMS said today.

A total of 5359 leases are on offer in Lease Sale 205.

Reading of the bids is due to take place tomorrow in New Orleans. Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne and MMS director Randall Luthi will attend the sale, the MMS said.

MMS statistics showed a total of 28.7 million acres were on offer off the central Gulf Coast, of which 3.9 million acres had attracted bids. Interest was focused in particular on the Walker Ridge area.

Bidders were also targeting deep-water areas with water deeper than 2000 metres attracting considerable interest.

However, most of the acreage on offer lies in water depths of more than 800 metres.
