Tethys primes Kazakh gas pumps

By Upstream staff

Toronto-listed independent Tethys Petroleum said today it is on track to start pumping gas in Kazakhstan next month and will gradually triple production over the next few years.

Tethys is developing the Kyzyloi gas field on the western shore of the Aral Sea in Kazakhstan. It plans to pump gas through a 55 kilometre pipeline into the Bukhara-Ural gas trunk line, which runs northward to Russia.

"We've now completed all of the work. The only physical work that remains is the physical connection into the main line," Tethys boss David Robson told Reuters on the sidelines of an energy conference.

"Hopefully that (start of production) will happen by the end of this month, maybe the beginning of November."

Robson said initial production will be between 600,000 and 625,000 cubic metres per day.

"We've already discovered more gas. ... If everything goes according to plan some time in the middle of the year after we should reach 2 million cubic metres per day," he said.

Tethys is also developing the Greater Akkulka Block.
