Iran's oil industry will be going through one of its most testing periods in the next few years as it struggles to overcome management shortcomings and unprecedented technical and financial problems.
The result could be stagnation, whereby crude output levels remain effectively frozen for the foreseeable future, or, as some see it, the country could witness a long-awaited test of its capabilities and a breakthrough to less dependence on outside help for growth.
Whatever the eventual outcome, Opec's second-biggest producer looks like it is stuck with its present production capacity level of about 4 million barrels per day for the rest of thisand probably much of the next decade.
