Ghana urges Tullow to speed up

By Upstream staff

Ghana has said it wants UK and Ireland-based Tullow Oil to begin production at its deep-water discovery by 2009, a year earlier than the company's latest estimate, an official said today.

"We are the government, we are going to sit with them and tell them to produce from 2009," Thomas Manu, director of exploration at the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), told Reuters.

Tullow CEO Aidan Heavey said in September he expected first oil in 2010 or 2011, versus a previous 2012 start-up target.

Manu also said he hoped the Tullow Hyedua field, plus another deep-water field operated by Kosmos Energy, would be pumping about 60,000 barrels per day from early 2009.
