BP gets to work on Oman duo

By Upstream staff

UK supermajor BP has handed out for the early stage of development of its project to develop tight gas from the Khazzan and Makarem fields in Oman.

In September, BP said it could pump gas to market in Oman as early as 2011 from appraisal wells it drills in the first stage of the project.

Australia's WorleyParsons won the contract for preliminary engineering, including looking at early production from appraisal wells. BP gave no details of the contract value.

BP won the contract to develop tight gas reserves in Oman in January. Oman later said the supermajor would invest $700 million to develop the Khazzan and Makarem gas fields.

The fields could hold reserves of up to 30 trillion cubic feet, potentially nearly doubling Oman's proven gas reserves of 35.6 Tcf at the end of 2006.

US outfit Global Geophysical Services has won the contract to shoot seismic data of the fields, BP said. Oman-based Dalma Energy will supply rigs for the work.
