Cooper Energy said today it was targeting increased oil production from its Australian operations as it gears up for its first international drilling programme in 2008.
Cooper said it plans to advance its international programme next year by drilling a first well at the Gurame gas field in Seruwa, Indonesia
The company will also begin offshore drilling in the Hammamet block in Tunisia.
“Importantly, these are not high-risk wildcat exploration wells in frontier basins but low risk appraisal and exploration wells in proven petroleum provinces,” Cooper managing director Michael Scott said.
“With some $45 million committed to an aggressive international drilling programme, we are pursuing targets that can have a very material impact on the share price of the company,” he added.
The Perth-based company recently successfully completed its $55 million share placement and $5 million share purchase plan, boosting its cash position to record levels and underpinning its aggressive growth drive.
On the domestic front, Cooper is forecasting production from the Cooper basin Callawonga and Worrior fields to rise to 300,000 barrels or more for 2007/08, up from 256,871 barrels for 2006/07.
“We are heading towards 2008 with the company in its strongest ever position – record cash levels, an expected major production boost at a time of high oil prices, and a forward drilling program that has the objective of proving up our first international development,” Scott said.
