DNO hopes rise at Hawler-1

By Upstream staff

Norwegian independent DNO said today that it is getting "strong indications" of oil from the Hawler-1 well, drilled in the Erbil area in Iraq's Kurdish region.

"As a result of these observations an extensive test programme will be carried out in the well," DNO said in a statement.

Hawler-1, which spudded on 14 November 2007, is the first well drilled at the Erbil production sharing agreement area.

DNO said the well has now reached aabout 3400 metres. While drilling through the top of the Cretaceous reservoir horizon an influx of oil was observed, and oil shows were also observed in several other intervals during drilling.

The company added it plans to drill ahead to test further potential reservoir horizons before carrying out tests on the well.

If the tests confirm commercial flow rates an appraisal well will be drilled immediately after completion of Hawler-1.

The company said its production in the fourth quarter reached 15,762 barrels of oil per day. Production for 2007 rose to 18,000 bpd, up 40% year-on-year.
