Darwin disappoints in Heron-2 tester

By Upstream staff

Melbourne-based MEO Australia said its Heron-2 exploration well in the Timor Sea had failed to find gas in the primary Epenarra structure of the Darwin formation.

The well was sidetracked earlier this month to test the Epenarra levels after drilling debris blocked the original bore in the secondary Plover Sands target, preventing testing. Gas was flowed at 6 million cubic feet per day from the overlying Erlang formation.

MEO said the well had produced enough log data to suggest good reservoir potential in the Plover Sands levels. It said the project partners where now consulting whether to suspend the well to allow future redrilling of the Plover formation or to plug and abandon it.

The company said the partners were considering applying to retain their licence covering the Heron North structure to allow further exploration. It said data from the Heron-2 well would be used to help determine a site for the planned Heron-3B spud, for which three locations had been cleared by the regulators.

The Heron-2 well was drilled by the Seadrill jack-up rig West Atlas.

MEO operates the NT/P68 licence with a 90% stake held through its TSP Arafura Petroleum and Oz-Exoil subsidiaries. Petrofac owns the remaining 10% interest.
