Satisfied with progress: Qatar Energy Minister Abdullah al-Attiyah
Golden Pass ‘on track for 2009 start’
The Golden Pass liquefied natural gas import terminal on the Gulf Coast, designed as an entry point for Qatari LNG into the US, is on track to enter operation in 2009, it was reported.
Qatar Energy Minister Abdullah al-Attiyah said yesterday he was satisfied with progress at the plant, which is being built by a joint venture including state-owned Qatar Petroleum, and that he expected it to be in operation by the middle of next year, the Gulf Times newspaper.
The terminal in Texas is being built by a consortium of Qatar Petroleum and US supermajors ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips. The facility will process the equivalent of up to 2 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day by 2010, to be fed into the US’s gas pipeline infrastructure.
Attiyah said he expected Qatar to meet a third of the US’s gas imports within two or three years, with more than 20 million tonnes expected to move through the Golden Pass facility within two years.
Attiyah’s comments came during a visit to Qatar by US Energy Secretary Sam Bodman. Bodman thank Qatar for its investment in the US natural gas sector, the newspaper reported.
