Gas demand pays off for Williams

US natural gas player Williams Companies has reported a 220% rise in net profit last year thanks to higher production and better prices for natural gas liquids.

Net profit for the year came in at $990 million compared with $309 million in 2006.

Net profit for the fourth quarter was up 53% to $225 million compared with $147 million in the same quarter in 2006.

The company said it pushed production up by 21% during the year while proven reserves went up by 12%.
