Australia’s Key Petroleum said the Kiliwani North-1 had been spudded on Tanzania’s Songo-Songo Island.

Key said operator Aminex began drilling the well on Saturday using the Caroil 6 land rig.

The well will be drilled to a depth of 2012 metres and will test suspected oil accumulations in the Nyuni block, as well as lower Cretaceous sandstones which produce gas in the nearby Songo Songo gas field.

The well is expected to take 35 days to drill.

The Kiliwani-1 well, sunk on nearby Kiliwani island, was plugged and abandoned after failing to find commercial quantities of hydrocarbons.

The partners at the Nyuni licence are operator Aminex (39%), Rakgas (25%), Key (20%), East Africa Exploration (10%) and Bounty (6%).
