Gulf pair forge ahead in Iraq

By Upstream staff

United Arab Emirates-based Dana Gas and Crescent Petroleum have completed more than 70% of a project to find, develop and supply natural gas for power generation in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdish region, and are on track to supply first gas by the middle of this year, Dana said.

The company said in a statement that the pair had wrapped up the engineering, procurement and manufacturing stage of the contract with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), and that they were now working with local contractors on building infrastructure.

Dana said it expects to supply an initial 150 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, rising to 300 MMcfd by early next year.

The gas will drive new power plans being built in Erbil and Sulymaniya in northern Iraq.

The $650 million project will supply liquid petroleum gas to the power plant via a 180-kilometre pipeline.

Dana said its executive chairman, Hamid Jafar, had met with KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani to report on progress in the project. The company said the development of a gas utilisation hub for local industries had also been discussed.

Dana and Crescent are both based in Sharjah. Crescent is a shareholder in Abu Dhabi-listed Dana.
