Total casts off for Bangladesh shoot

By Upstream staff

French giant Total will start a $20 million 3D seismic shoot of blocks 17 and 18, off Bangladesh, next week, Petrobangla director Mohammad Muqtadir Ali said.

"The company will conduct a 3D survey in 17 and 18 blocks covering 13,724 square kilometres in the Bay of Bengal near the (Burma) border," Muqtadir told Reuters.

"The survey will continue till the end of March and by September we may receive the result of it as they will require up to six months to analyse and interpret the data and information," Muqtadir told the news agency.

Total also received approval from the army-backed interim government to extend the exploration period in the production sharing contract by three years until 5 May 2009.

Before initiating the survey, Total carried out a bathymetric survey of the two blocks in preparation for the 3D survey, officials said.

They said there was a prospect of gas reserves of several trillion cubic feet.
