Solimar spuds Maricopa-6

By Upstream staff

Australia-listed Solimar Energy has spudded the first well at the Maricopa project in the San Joaquin basin in California.

The Wellington Maricopa-6 has been drilled to 126 metres and is being prepared to run surface casing before being drilled to a target depth of 1097 metres. Drilling is expected to take around eight days using the Western Drilling Rig 78.

The primary zone of interest is the Contact sands, which are known to be oil bearing in this area of the basin.

If the initial well proves successful, then an additional well, Wellington Maricopa-7, will be drilled at the Maricopa project.

Solimar Energy is the operator of the development as part of a 50-50 venture with partner Sunset Energy on 50%.

The Maricopa development lies in the Midway-Sunset oilfield, with estimated reserves of more than 3 billion barrels. The lease already contains five wells completed as producers, with close to 1 million barrels being produced from the lease and some 2.2 million barrels from immediate adjoining leases since 1930.
