J Ray scoops Platong prize

By Upstream staff

US supermajor Chevron has tapped offshore engineering group J Ray McDermott to build the central processing and accommodation platforms for its Platong Gas 2 development in the Gulf of Thailand.

The contract includes engineering, procurement, building and installation services for the platforms, which will lie about 200 kilometres off Thailand.

Work on the platforms is expected to start in the fourth quarter of this year with installation expected in 2010. Start-up of the project is expected in 2011.

The value of the contract was not disclosed. Chevron said the total development cost of the project would be about $3.1 billion.

The Platong Gas 2 project is expected to process more than 330 million cubic feet of natural gas per day through facilities designed to handle up to 420 Mmcfd. The new capacity is expected to boost Chevron’s operated production from wells in the Gulf of Thailand to more than 2 Bcfd.

Chevron said the 19,000-tonne central processing platform would be connected by bridge to a 200-person accommodation unit.

The platform will initially be tied into five wellhead platforms.

“Platong Gas 2 has the potential to satisfy approximately 7% of Thailand’s projected 2011 total natural gas consumption, or almost 14% of the natural gas used for power generation,” said Tara Triadnakorn, president of Chevron Thailand Exploration & Production.
