Australia’s Incremental Petroleum and Otto Energy have spudded the Ikihoyuk-1 well on the Idirne gas project in Turkey, the first of five wells to be drilled this year targeting suspected reserves of 10 billion to 20 billion cubic feet of gas in the Thrace onshore basin.

The wells will be used to prove up the reserves for development in 2009, the companies said today. The targeted prospects lie close to existing discoveries made at Idirne by the joint venture last year. Up to 10 targets were identified from 3D survey data of the area, the companies said.

Otto Energy chief executive Alex Parks said the wells were considered to be relatively low risk. He said in a company statement that any finds could be tied back to the existing central processing facility at the field in Western Turkey.

The Ikihoyuk-1 well will be drilled to a depth of 520 metres and is expected to take 10 days to complete. The Ikihoyuk structure is thought to lie between 225 and 325 metres depth. The well will also test a deeper secondary target, Incremental Petroleum said in a separate release.

The company moved its drilling rig 1700 kilometres from the Selmo field for the idirne campaign.

Incremental operates the Idirne project with a 45% stake, while Otto holds 35% and two Turkish partners hold 10% each.
