Nigeria strike back on cards

By Upstream staff

Nigerian oil workers’ union Pengasson has threatened to re-launch an industry-wide strike next week after accusing supermajor ExxonMobil of going back on agreements reached earlier this week over a labour dispute between the operator and workers.

"The CWC (central working committee) will meet on Tuesday to decide on a strike. What will determine whether that meeting will hold or not is what happens between now and Tuesday," Bayo Olowoshile secretary of Pengassan told Reuters.

The union had said on Monday it was calling off the latest in a series of strike threats to allow talks with ExxonMobil over the sacking of about 100 Nigerian workers.

Olowoshile said ExxonMobil representatives had failed to turn up for scheduled talks on Wednesday and had reneged on a number of agreements including the withdrawal of a legal case at an industrial court.
