A fire on the Shell-operated Trans-Niger oil export pipeline is burning for a fourth day, but output and exports have not been unaffected so far, a company spokesman said today.
The blaze started on a section of the Trans-Niger pipeline in the Ogoni area in the southern state of Rivers on Sunday. The pipeline carries crude oil to the Bonny export terminal.
A second fire was also reported to have started on Sunday on another pipeline in the region that feeds Nigeria's biggest refinery in Port Harcourt, the capital of the state.
"There are no updates. We have not been able to extinguish the fire yet," the Shell spokesman in Hague in the Netherlands told Reuters, speaking of the Trans-Niger pipeline.
"We tried to enter the area where the fire started but we were refused by the local community."
The fire had not disrupted oil exports or output.
The incident came after Shell lifted force majeure on Bonny Light crude exports in early March, following pipeline leaks in February.
Without any problems, Nigeria's key Bonny Light crude, which is exported from the terminal, is produced at around 400,000 barrels per day.
Reuters survey showed Nigerian's total planned shipment would average about 1.8 million bpd for April and just below 2 million bpd for May.
Bonny Light exports were expected to average 222,000 bpd for April and 306,000 bpd for May.
The cause of the fire was not yet identified, another spokesman with Shell in Nigeria said yesterday.
Disputes between local communities and oil multinationals are common in the Niger Delta, a vast impoverished region that is home to Africa's biggest hydrocarbon industry.
In one of last year's incidents, fires blazed at six different points on the pipeline. It took Shell four months to douse the fires.
Two separate attacks in May last year forced the company to halt output of up to 170,000 bpd for a few days.
