Origin fishing at Kupe

By Upstream staff

Origin Energy, the operator of the Kupe gas project on New Zealand’s offshore Taranaki basin, said it was said it was fishing for stuck pipe in the third of three development wells being sunk on the project.

The Kupe South-6, -7 and -8 wells are being sunk on a batch basis by the jack-up rig Ensco 107. The rig was drilling the final section of the Kupe-7 well when the drill string became stuck, Origin said in a statement today.

The well had just penetrated the target Farewell formation with higher gas flows when the string became stuck at a measured depth of depth of 3454 metres.

Origin operates the project with a 50% stake, with the remaining stakes being held by subsidiaries of local players Genesis Energy (31%) and New Zealand Oil & Gas (NZOG) (15%), and by Japan’s Mitsui E&P (5%).
