Russian natural gas group Gazprom is likely to secure energy assets in Libya alongside Italian oil company Eni , it was reported today.
The move would give state-owned Gazprom a long-sought entry to north African oil and gas fields and tighten its grip on European markets, the Financial Times reported in London.
Europe gets about a quarter of its natural gas from Gazprom and looks at north Africa as an alternative to Russia.
Eni, the main foreign operator in Libya, has agreed to share assets with Gazprom "in a north African country, probably Libya", the newspaper said, citing industry sources.
Eni chief executive Paolo Scaroni met Gazprom head Alexei Miller yesterday and discussed upstream joint projects in other countries, Eni said in a statement, Reuters reported.
An Eni spokeswoman declined to comment on the newspaper story. Eni and Gazprom signed a strategic partnership in November 2006.
Eni recently agreed to double capacity with a pipeline carrying up to 8 billion cubic metres a year of Libyan gas across the Mediterranean Sea to Italy.
