Louisiana-based Global Industries has ordered a second deep-water dynamically positioned combination derrick/pipelay barge worth $250 million for its offshore fleet.
Global said in a statement the decision was in line with its strategy to focus increasingly on deep-water subsea umbilicals, risers and flowlines (Surf) work.
The new vessel, dubbed the Global 1201, is due for delivery in April 2011, about 12 months after the arrival of its sister barge the Global 1200.
The 587-foot vessel will be capable of operating in water up to 10,000 feet deep and of handling concrete-coated pipe of up to five feet diameter.
It will also have a 1200-tonne capacity crane and a deep-water lowering system.
The DP2-classed vessel will be able to travel at speeds up to 12 knots.
The new order means Global will have added five major vessels to its fleet since 2006, the company said.
