Sydney-based Anzon Petroleum said it would complete the Basker-6 sidetrack off Australia’s Victoria state after confirming that oil-bearing sands struck in the well were a south-easterly extension of the Basker field.

Anzon said wireline logging had identified five oil-bearing Intra-Latrobe sand horizons, including one not previously seen in other wells on the field. Pressure testing had confirmed the reservoirs were contiguous with the rest of the Basker field.

The company said the well, in Australia’s Bass Strait, would be completed immediately and connected to the Crystal Sea floating production, storage and offloading vessel. It said it would start running casing into the well today.

First oil from the well is expected in July this year. The well is expected to boost output from the Basker Manta project from current production of about 10,000 barrels per day.

The well is being drilled by the Diamond Offshore semi-submersible Ocean Patriot.

Anzon is the operator of the Basker-Manta joint venture on 50%, with partner Beach Petroleum on 30%, CIECO Exploration & Production on 10% and Sojitz Energy on the remaining 10%.
