Russian-focused player Urals Energy said it was logging the vertical section of well 105 on the Dulisma field in East Siberia after oil was flowed during a drillstem test.
The company said it wanted to evaluate the reservoir using the pilot bore before drilling a horizontal well.
It said flow results were better than expected but did not provide figures.
Urals said it expected to complete the well and produce first oil by the beginning of June.
The company also said it had taken delivery of a second Chinese-built rig, and expected a further two units before the end of the year.
It said work had started on a central processing facility at the field and a pipeline to link the Dulisma field to the East Siberia to Pacific Ocean oil export line.
Until it is complete, production from the field will be moved out via a temporary pipeline and tanker trucks.
