Kupe sidetrack hits depth

By Upstream staff

Australia’s Origin Energy has drilled the Kupe South-7 well on New Zealand’s offshore Taranaki basin to final depth after being forced to sidetrack the bore last week.

The well, the last of three batch-drilled development wells on the Kupe project to hit depth, was drilled to 3503 feet measured depth, Origin said in a statement today.

The well was sidetracked below 3454 feet. Origin said the well was now being logged before a five-inch liner is cemented.

The wells are being drilled and completed by the jack-up rig Ensco 107. The KS-6 and KS-8 wells have already been drilled to depth and completed.

The Kupe project lies on permit PML 38146 about 30 kilometres off the coast.

Production from the field is expected to start in 2009 through a single unmanned offshore platform linked to onshore processing facilities by a pipeline.

Origin operates the project with a 50% stake, with the remaining stakes being held by subsidiaries of local players Genesis Energy (31%) and New Zealand Oil & Gas (NZOG) (15%), and by Japan’s Mitsui E&P (5%).
