Ice Maiden to take guests

By Upstream staff

UK-based A&P Tyne has won a multi-million pound job with C&M Group for the conversion of the former icebreaker Ice Maiden I into a DP3 flotel unit.

Once completed, the vessel will be the only monohull vessel of its type and capability, accommodating almost 400 people and able to operate anywhere in the world.

The vessel will be the first of her type to be fully ice classed and will be capable of operating in temperatures of -40C.

The project will require the fitting of about 1400 tonnes of new accommodation block steel work, and accommodation for 399 people.

There will be a further 1900 tonnes of steel work fabricated and fitted to form new decks and machinery spaces, while eight new generating sets will be fitted to power eight new thrusters giving the vessel full DP3 capability.

Initial preparations for the vessel’s conversion took place in Alabama, but after a comprehensive review, C&M decided to move to A&P Tyne to ensure delivery by the end of this year.

The vessel is due to be brought to the Tyne by the heavylift cargo vessel Fairstar Fjord where the main part of the conversion will be undertaken.
