OMV calls for South Stream through Austria

News agencies

Austrian operator OMV said it hoped the Kremlin-backed South Stream gas pipeline project - which will deliver Russian gas to Italy via the Black Sea - would run through its Baumgarten hub in Austria.

"We want to strengthen Baumgarten further," OMV boss Wolfgang Ruttenstorfer said at a joint news conference with Gazprom deputy chairman Alexander Medvedev, according to Reuters

"We are very interested that part of the South Stream gas will be pumped through Baumgarten."

Russian newspaper Kommersant reported on Monday that Russia's South Stream pipeline could run via Slovenia instead of Austria to northern Italy, following Gazprom head Alexei Miller’s visit to Ljubljana, Reuters said.

The pipeline, which will be jointly built by Gazprom and Italy's Eni, will eventually carry 30 billion cubic metres of Russian gas per year under the Black Sea to southern Europe.
