BP steps on gas in Oman

New wires

BP is targeting production of up to 300 million cubic feet per day of natural gas in Oman within three years as the Gulf Arab state seeks to meet local demand, the UK supermajor said today.

Oman aims to boost gas output by 11% this year.

BP signed a production-sharing deal with Oman in January to develop gas fields that could hold reserves of up to 30 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

"We hope, if everything fits in place, to produce between 200 MMcfd to 300 MMcfd three years from now to help the country meet its gas demands," John Pooler, BP vice-president of subsurface & wells, told Reuters on the sidelines of an energy seminar.

Oman has seen gas demand surge as an economic boom feeds both power consumption and industrial growth.

The sultanate is struggling to meet both domestic demand and its gas export commitments.

BP said in January commercial production at the Omani fields should start after 2010. The supermajor last year won a concession to develop Oman's tight gas, which are reserves in complex formations that are difficult to exploit.
