Players eye Dominican Republic

By Upstream staff

The Dominican Republic's hydrocarbons exploration and production office is reviewing proposals from a number of explorers keen to get to work in the country's play, the office's deputy hydrocarbons exploration director Melaneo Aquino has said.

Areas available for concession span the Cibao, San Juan, Bani-San Cristobal and San Pedro basins, Aquino told BNamericas in an interview.

Aquino did not disclose the names of companies that have submitted proposals.

The Dominican Republic, which does not yet produce any oil, has not launched a formal bidding round. Instead, interested companies may approach the office to inquire about available areas, information and the submission of proposals, Aquino said.

Three companies are already active in the country's E&P play - Petrolera Once-Once in Cibao, Maleno Oil in Enriquillo and Murfin Dominicana in Azua, Aquino said.

Figures for the country's potential hydrocarbons reserves are not available.

"All we have now are potential areas, we do not have discovered deposits," Aquino said.
