Mexico sets energy debates

By Upstream staff

The Mexican Congress has scheduled 20 debate forums for the proposed energy reform bill that has caused commotion in the country.

The debates will take place between 12 May and 22 June even though congress is set to end its session on 30 April.

Mexican media reported that the scheduled debates would be held during a special summer session.

The debates were demanded by Mexican left-wing party members who occupied congress on 10 April.

The takeover came as a result of the left-wing party fearing that the incumbent National Action Party and the Institutional Revolutionary Party would approve the proposed energy bill without giving the Mexican people an opportunity to voice their concern.

Those who oppose the energy reform bill feared the country's oil and gas assets would be privatised.
