Latest jobsJapan's state-run Japan Oil, Gas & Metals National Corporation (Jogmec) said today it had won a mining licence for the Severo-Mogdinsky Block in Russia and was ready to start a geological survey of the area.
Jogmec plans to drill more than four test wells within the next five years as part of an exploration project to find hydrocarbons at the block.
A Jogmec official told Reuters the company would spend roughly 10 billion yen ($95.8 million) at Severo-Mogdinksy.
The 3747 square kilometre block lies about 1000 kilometres north of the East Siberian town of Irkutsk, and 150 kilometres south-east of the proposed route of Russia's Asian oil pipeline.
A Bloomberg report said the work would be carried out via a joint venture between Jogmec and Russia's Irkutsk Oil. Irkutsk will take a 51% stake in the venture.
