Shell sets Sakhalin 2 date

By Upstream staff

Russia's Sakhalin 2 development should start exporting liquefied natural gas shortly after construction work finishes late this year, project partner Shell said today.

Sakhalin 2 is controlled by Russian gas export monopoly Gazprom, with involvement by Shell, Mitsui and Mitsubishi .

"The Sakhalin Energy team are doing their utmost to complete the main construction by the end of 2008. LNG exports are expected to start shortly thereafter," Shell's chief financial officer Peter Voser said.

Gazprom last week said it expected LNG shipments from the project to start at the beginning of 2009, later than initial expectations of an end-of-the-year start.

The $22 billion venture had been led by Shell but the company agreed to sell control to Gazprom after Russia's environmental watchdog threatened to strip it of production licences for breaking environmental rules.

Voser was speaking on a conference call to discuss Shell's first-quarter earnings.
