Range delays Puntland spud

By Upstream staff

Range Resources and Africa Oil have decided to delay drilling at the Nogal Valley Block, in Puntland, Somalia, because of unrest in the region.

Range said the recent rise in civil unrest in southern Somalia and piracy along the Somali coast had thrown up significant logistical difficulties in transporting equipment to the drilling location.

Although plans to spud the first well in July were well advanced, Range Resources said that after consultation with the Puntland government, it was decided to delay the programme temporarily while "local issues are resolved by relevant authorities".

The company added that the mobilisation of a seismic crew to the Dharoor Valley block in northern Puntland was proceeding smoothly. The shoot is still scheduled to start in the middle of next month.
