ONGC gets extra time in KG basin

By Upstream staff

The Indian government has granted Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) until July 2010 to appraise the discoveries in deep-water Block KG-DWN-98/2 off India’s east coast.

This means ONGC can embark on a three-well appraisal programme this year, plus shoot additional 3D seismic, said co-venturer Cairn India in its latest quarterly report.

The permit in the Krishna Godavari basin contains several discoveries. Five exploration wells were drilled in the block between in 2005 and 2006. Two hit gas-bearing sands and the other three flowed gas during testing.

Last year, two exploration wells were drilled – the hyped-up UD-1 gas discovery and the KT-1 probe, which hit shallow gas but not deep targets for operational reasons.

Cairn India said approval had been granted by the government for an appraisal period up to July 2010 under the production sharing contract.
