3D ready to bend West Seahorse-1

By Upstream staff

Melbourne-based 3D Oil said it had started work on the directional section of its West Seahorse-3 appraisal well on the Vic/P57 permit off Victoria after reaching a depth of 1123 metres.

3D said in a statement it planned to directionally drill the well to a total measured depth of 1863 metres to test updip sections of the Latrobe Group sediments targeted in the original West Seahorse-1 well drilled in 1981.

The company said it expected to strike the reservoirs later this weekend. The well is being sunk by the jack-up rig West Triton.

The West Seahorse-1 well flowed 1800 barrels per day of oil from the uppermost interval of the Latrobe Group. However, 3D said more recent interpretations suggested the West Seahorse could be larger than originally thought.

It said reinterpretations of the geology also suggested the subsequent West Seahorse-2 had been drilled on the edge of the field and that larger oil accumulations lay updip.

The field lies about five kilometres west of the producing Seahorse field.

3D operates the Vic/P57 permit with a 100% stake.
