Ombrina Mare hints at new riches

By Upstream staff

Rome-based Mediterranean Oil & Gas has recorded "significant" oil shows in the Ombrina Mare-2 appraisal well in the Adriatic Sea off Italy.

The company said continuous oil has shown inside the well’s main carbonate formation on cuttings and shale shakers.

Ombrina Mare-2 is currently being drilled at about 2145 metres inside the carbonate primary target.

The well lies one kilometre east of the Ombrina Mare-1 discovery well, the carbonate main target of which was found to be oil bearing in its vertical exploration well, which produced 400 barrels per day.

Drilling at 1500 to 1800 metres in the complex’s sand and shale levels last week resulted in recordings of significant gas shows from 5% to 12%.

Two runs of logs have confirmed the presence of several gas sand levels in the secondary target zone, the middle-upper Pliocene gas sands complex.

The company said the Ombrina Mare-2 gas sands “have a good correlation” with the main gas-bearing sand levels at Ombrina Mare-1, where they produced 5.3 million cubic feet of gas per day to 6.7 MMcfd of gas.

The results are thus far are in line with the company’s geological expectations.

Mediterranean plans to core where oil shows are present and drill the carbonate sequence to the scheduled total depth.

Mediterranean has a 100% stake in the appraisal well.

Company chief Sergio Morandi stated: “Once full testing is carried out we will be in a position to better estimate the oil and gas volumes and the most likely size of the fields. Five million barrels of P1 and P2 oil reserves from (Ombrina Mare-1 have) already been certified.”
